Perpetua

Aged 26, married and with her infant child

Refused to betray Christ

Alone; she was locked in a dungeon

“I am a Christian”

“And I will not save myself”

“I will not betray Christ”

“Not even for the sake of my child”

Said Perpetua to the Romans

And as she entered the arena

To be killed by a wild beast

For a holiday show for the crowd

She sang a hymn of triumph

She was tossed by a bull

But not killed

She was later returned to the arena

To be killed by a young gladiator

In his shame and revulsion

He stabbed weakly at Perpetua

And seeing his condition

And having pity for him

She guided his sword

To a vital area

And died
